Does this person look like they live in Illinois? AI thinks so. And a handful of posts on social media that have been attributed to real people agree.
This is the basis for a Reddit post entitled “The Most Stereotyped People in America.” The post, shared on his Reddit section dedicated to discussions on artificial intelligence, shares AI-generated photos of what the average person looks like in each state.
Commenters say the results are relatively accurate, at least in Illinois.
Each photograph is a portrait of a person (mostly a man) showing some creative expression through clothing, environment, facial expressions, etc., intended to articulate the location.
For example, a typical AI-generated photo of a person shows a man sitting behind a giant block of cheese.
According to the post, the typical Illinois person looks less distinctive and more normal. In fact, one commenter compared a man from Illinois to Waldo.
The comment reads, “Illinois is Wally.”
“Illinois”, another begins. “It sounds boring to live there.”
For other commenters, pictures of the average person in Illinois aren’t just boring. That’s exactly right.
“Hahaha,” says one commenter. “Illinois is just like my brother-in-law.”
“The Illinois story is strangely accurate,” says another.
Accurate or not, nearly all AI-generated photos, including Illinois, do not show smiling faces, except for three states: Connecticut, Hawaii, and West Virginia.
See all photos here. Illinois is easy to miss, so be careful not to skip it.
