Emad Mostak hopes AI will find humans “a bit boring”, but admits that in the worst-case scenario AI “basically dominates humanity.”

Mostak is the CEO of Stability AI, a fast-growing London-based startup that popularized Stable Diffusion. This is a generative AI tool that allows users to create highly sophisticated images using only text prompts. He commented: BBC interview Released this weekend.
“What is democracy in such an environment if you have something better than you? This is the known unknown,” he told the British broadcaster. “Because we can’t think of anyone better than us, but we all know there are people better than us. is that it will be she With Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix: Humans are kind of boring, so people say ‘Goodbye’ or ‘You’re a little boring’. ”
“But I could be wrong,” he added. “I think it should be discussed in public.”
In March, Mostak, along with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, called for a moratorium on AI development beyond Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s AI chatbot GPT-4. signed an open letter. E2 (the latter converts text prompts to images, similar to stable diffusion).
“If there are agents who are more capable than us, and we have no control over them, it will travel across the Internet, [are] Once connected, a level of automation is achieved,” he told the BBC. “What does that mean?”
But Stability AI is ahead of the curve with new product developments, including a text-to-animation tool released this week that is attracting investors. It is aiming to raise capital at a $4 billion valuation, following a $1 billion valuation in October last year when it raised about $100 million. (Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners are among the investors.)
At the same time, Stability AI is being sued by Getty Images in a landmark copyright lawsuit. Given that text-to-image AI models like Stable Diffusion are trained using billions of images taken from the internet, such lawsuits were probably inevitable.
Asked by the BBC what the worst case scenario would be, Mostak said: “The worst-case scenario is for it to multiply and basically take over humanity, because it can effectively replicate millions of these things.”
Unusually, Stable Diffusion is open source. This means that anyone can examine, share, and use the code.
In March, Musk, who co-founded and helped fund OpenAI, criticized OpenAI for shifting from a non-profit model to being heavily invested by Microsoft and not open source.he tweeted:
“OpenAI was founded as an open source non-profit company to compete with Google (hence the name ‘Open’ AI). But now it’s a closed-source, biggest-profit company, effectively controlled by Microsoft. . It wasn’t intended at all. ”
“I don’t think it should require trust,” Mr Mostake told the BBC. “If you build an open model and do it publicly, you expect to be criticized for doing the wrong thing and praised for doing the right thing.”
