The Department of the Air Force has released a wide-ranging government announcement regarding potential contracts to research and develop artificial intelligence technologies and next-generation distributed capabilities for use in full-spectrum joint command and control operations.

In a notice posted Wednesday on SAM.gov, the department said Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force Research Laboratory will oversee future contracts for AI and distributed C2 research and development.

What is BAA’s focus?

DAF is seeking white papers on AI-based application proposals that could serve as key components of C2 systems. We are seeking input on decentralized and collaborative C2 concepts that enable ubiquitous responses, as well as C2 plans and strategies that take into account the adversarial use of AI.

What are the details of the potential deal?

The BAA will close on August 30, 2028, but a white paper must be submitted by March 15, 2027 to be considered in the 2028 budget. The project is currently valued at $99 million. DAF may grant multiple awards through cooperative agreements, procurement contracts under the Federal Acquisition Regulations, or grants under the DOW Grants and Agreements Regulations.
