A recent survey from LinkedIn highlights the increasing difficulty Indian recruiters are having when trying to find qualified candidates. Recruiting activity is currently up 40% compared to pre-pandemic levels, but 74% of recruiters report they are struggling to identify the right talent. There are two main factors contributing to this challenge. One is the rise of AI-generated applications, which accounts for 53% of recruiters’ concerns, and the other is the lack of essential skills, cited by 47%.

Competition for jobs is becoming even more intense. According to LinkedIn data, the number of applicants for each open role has more than doubled in India since 2022. At the same time, many professionals feel inadequately prepared for the job market. While 72% of workers say they are actively looking for a job in 2026, 85% admit they are unsure about navigating the process.

To cope with these pressures, recruiters are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence. 71% of those already using AI say it helps them identify candidates with skills they might otherwise miss, and 80% feel it helps them assess skills more effectively. This shows that AI will be an important tool to improve recruitment efficiency and accuracy.

Looking to the future, recruitment is likely to increase even further. Around 8 out of 10 recruiters in India plan to expand their use of AI to meet hiring goals, assess applicants more thoroughly, and retain top talent. This means a broad shift in hiring practices, with employers moving away from traditional metrics such as job title and education, and focusing instead on proven skills and abilities.
