In a recent video series, Elder Gerrit W. Gong discussed spiritual guideposts that can inform personal use of artificial intelligence (AI).
While many around the world are concerned about the moral implications of AI, Elder Gong emphasized that this tool has immense potential for good if used and developed wisely.
“Having worked for years at the intersection of faith, learning, and global policy, I see artificial intelligence not only as a very important technological development, but also as a very important moral opportunity to reflect on who we are and decide how to act in today’s world,” he shared.

1. The truth that grounds us
“We all have sacred worth and dignity.…When we truly understand who we are, we can approach AI and other emerging technologies with greater confidence, purpose, and wisdom.”
2. Remember what AI can’t do
“Artificial intelligence can answer questions, but not prayers. It can organize information, but it cannot provide revelation, covenantal connections, or divine truth.”
3. God is never artificial.

5. Focus on what truly makes us human.
“For a long time, we have defined for ourselves what humans can do that machines, even intelligent ones, cannot do. But as artificial intelligence makes certain kinds of intelligence a kind of commodity, we are forced to redefine ourselves beyond intelligence. We can focus more on the enduring traits that make us truly human: faith, compassion, love, humility, empathy, and forgiveness.”

“You are not a random data point in an emotionless algorithm. You are a beloved child of God, a child of the covenant, a disciple of Jesus Christ. Your eternal worth is not calculated by preferences, trend lines, or predictive analysis. There is no machine that can measure your divine potential. Each person matters. We are all unique.”
“Technology does not tell us who we are or what we should do. Our personal moral agency means that, with God’s help, we can choose our own paths and priorities. But you decide with the Lord. Your identity and your agency are sacred.”
“In your personal life, use AI for logistics and drafting, but don’t use it as a substitute for trust. Set boundaries. If you’re tempted to confide more in a chatbot than in a friend, parent, or leader, why not reach out to a real person who knows and loves you today, right now?”
“Trust in God and those around you who know and love you. God knows you and loves you more than you know yourself or love yourself. This is why God gives to us. You can never say that to an AI chatbot.”

“In a world of accelerating technology and artificial intelligence, may we never lose the most important divine intelligence, the voice of God. May we listen to God’s whispers above the noise, love one another beyond the algorithms, and steward creation and the environment with respect.”
