NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced IT, communications, and networking solutions, and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), a prominent leader in transportation research, have announced that private 5G and artificial intelligence ( AI) to create potentially life-saving road warning systems.

Research by NEC and VTTI has created the potential to identify and warn drivers of dangerous traffic situations and hazards, such as approaching pedestrians and animals. These tests were conducted January through March 2023 at Virginia Smart Road in Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia Smart Road is one of the only facilities in the world capable of conducting these advanced tests.

The use of 5G is expanding in a wide range of fields, and it is expected that the demand for 5G networks will continue to grow globally. In response to this, NEC has conducted such demonstration experiments with VTTI researchers to identify best practices for effectively utilizing 5G for traffic safety under conditions such as international frequency bands and technical specifications. is developing.

In these trials, cameras and private 5G base stations installed on signal poles at VTTI’s private test facility transmit high-definition traffic images over private 5G, enabling real-time analysis of the images using AI. rice field.

Specifications and testing were commissioned by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

These tests do not use technology to identify or authenticate individuals. Testing included software-based privacy filtering based on Virginia Department of Transportation requirements.

NEC will use this experiment to advance further technological development and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents and traffic congestion around the world.

This solution combines private 5G and cutting-edge AI-based video analytics with C-V2X technology to create social value that contributes to the safety and security of vehicles and pedestrians near intersections. These technologies can identify dangerous situations in areas that can be blind spots for drivers and pedestrians and warn about such situations. This solution can not only reduce crashes and fatalities, but also support autonomous driving from roadside infrastructure.

Mike Mollenhauer, Director of Technology Implementation, VTTI

NEC’s infrastructure-linked mobility concept calls for highly reliable, low-latency communications through dedicated networks in order to predict and detect accidents near intersections. VTTI believes this proof-of-concept will complement his C-V2X technology to improve traffic safety by alerting vehicles and pedestrians to potential traffic hazards when crossing intersections. VTTI plans to work with NEC to apply the results of these tests to actual intersections on public roads.
