Zimbabwe's wealthiest man and the world's 10th wealthiest man pushes Africa's first AI factory

AI For Business

The construction of Africa's first AI factory is currently fully effective through both billionaire companies Masiyiwa's Cassava Technologies and Huang's Nvidia, one of the largest companies in America by its current valuation.

Currently, Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) are deployed in South Africa, the first recipient of Africa.

“Working with Nvidia will provide the sophisticated computing capabilities needed to promote AI innovation in Africa while strengthening the continent's digital independence,” Masiyiwa said in a press release.

“The future comes from young people using AI to build apps and solutions, building small and medium-sized businesses every day across this continent,” Masiyiwa co-chaired the Africa 2025 Global AI Summit in Kigali in April.

“They are digital natives and we just gave them what they do best.”

Founded by Zimbabwean Telecoms Tycoon Trive Masiywa, Pan-African Tech Company aims to deploy Nvidia's accelerated computing systems and AI software in major markets such as South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and Morocco.

Recent reports show that NVIDIA will leverage the NVIDIA Cloud Partner Reference Architecture to embed AI software and deploy hundreds of GPUs.

“Building digital infrastructure for the AI economy is a priority in order for Africa to make the most of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Masiywa added in a press statement.

“Our AI Factory doesn't need to look beyond Africa to provide infrastructure to expand this innovation and access cutting-edge AI infrastructure for African businesses, startups and researchers, and turn bold ideas into real-world breakthroughs.”

According to Hardy Pemhiwa, president of Cassava, as seen in Forbes, 3,000 Nvidia GPUs will be installed at factories in South Africa in June, with another 9,000 in Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco and Egypt for three to four years.
