YouTube is preparing to enhance its shorts platform later this year by integrating Google's latest AI-driven video generation tool, Veo 3. The announcement came at a keynote address at Cannes Lions, broadcast by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.
Currently, short pants creators can access content generated by AI via Veo 2 via Dream Screen, a feature that allows AI to insert backgrounds and generate an entire clip. The next evolution of Google's AI video technology, VEO 3 promises to bring even more powerful features.
Mohan did not reveal the detailed features unique to the shorts, but highlighted the Veo 3's upgraded video quality and ability to incorporate audio. These enhancements show important advances in the types of AI-generated content that can be created within the platform. The Veo 3, which Verge journalist Allison Johnson recently described as “Slop Monger's Dream,” is expected to bring a new level of creativity and realism to the shorts.
Details regarding access and pricing for Shorts Creators remain unknown. Currently, VEO 3 video generation is limited to users with subscriptions to Google's AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. When asked whether this model is available for free for shorts creators or whether it will stay behind the paywall, Google has not responded yet.
This AI integration coincides with YouTube's broader push to stay competitive in the short-form video space currently dominated by Tiktok and Instagram reels. According to Mohan, the shorts have already experienced massive traction, but now they're attracting more 20 billion viewing every day. This growth reflects an increasing trend in short form of mobile-first content consumption, especially among younger audiences.
The move to include VEO 3 in shorts also fits Google's broader strategy of embedding generated AI throughout the platform. In addition to videos, Google has recently expanded its AI capabilities in search, workspaces, and Android features. By bringing this technology into YouTube shorts, you can enhance your creators with tools to automate video production while maintaining creative control and originality.
Previous versions of VEO focused primarily on the generation of stylized clips and scenes, but the incorporation of audio marks in VEO 3 shows a notable evolution. This could open up new possibilities for dynamic storytelling, musical content and interactive shorts.
Although receiving AI-generated content from excitement about possibilities to concerns about originality and reliability, platforms like YouTube remain a mixture of bets on these tools, empowering creators and streamlining content creation.
With the Veo 3 on the horizon, short pants creators may have a more robust, Ai-enhanced toolkit at their own pace. Once the feature is rolled out, it could reconstruct how quickly and engaging content is produced and consumed on one of the world's largest video platforms.
