YouTube tightens monetization rules, low quality AI videos will be lost

AI Video & Visuals

As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand, YouTube announced new monetization policies for content creators, making certain types of AI-generated videos no longer eligible to earn money through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

The platform said the changes are aimed at curbing the spread of low-quality, repetitive and misleading content, while encouraging original, high-quality videos.

Under the updated policy, YouTube has identified three categories of content as “inauthentic content.” These include repetitive or mass-produced videos generated by AI, misleading content designed to manipulate viewers’ emotions and opinions, and videos that use human-like AI characters to discuss sensitive topics such as health, medical, financial, and legal advice.

According to YouTube, the rapid rise of AI tools has led to a proliferation of low-quality videos, harming the overall quality of the platform and impacting viewer experience and advertiser trust. The company said it will now prioritize content that is original, creative, informative and provides real value to viewers.

However, YouTube clarified that it does not ban all AI-generated videos. Content that demonstrates originality, maintains factual accuracy, and adheres to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Monetization Policies is still eligible to earn money.

The new rules mean AI content creators will have to be more careful when producing videos, with greater emphasis on original presentation, authentic information, and meaningful human input and editing. Failure to meet these criteria may result in disqualification from monetization.
