YouTube is stepping up the short pan game with fresh batches of generative AI tools aimed at making content creation faster, easier and more dynamic.

Among the highlights is a new image-to-video feature that allows creators to change any photo from their camera roll to a 6-second video. When a photo is uploaded, the tool suggests animations related to the content. That means adding movement to the landscape shot, animating group selfies, or making them magical. In one example, YouTube converted a static pedestrian signal into a short clip where the Walkingman icon began dancing.
The feature works similar to the tools we've already seen in Google's Gemini and Meta editing apps, and is rolling out this week in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with more regions continuing later this year.
But that's not all. YouTube is also rolling out new AI-powered effects that allow creators to rethink their own selfies and graffiti. Think about it: inter-sketch transformations, underwater animations, or surreal twin sequences. To access these, tap the Effects icon on your Shorts camera and go to the new AI tab.
All of these are powered by Google's advanced video generation model, Veo 2. According to YouTube, the feature comes with a SynthID watermark and a clear label, ensuring transparency when content is generated by AI. The rollout is built on the momentum of Cannes Lions 2025, with YouTube CEO Neal Mohan teasing the launch of VEO 3 and adding generated audio to the mix. That update is expected to hit the shorts later this summer.
And finally, YouTube has introduced AI Playground. This is a new hub that allows creators to test their generation tools, explore inspiration, and play with pre-filled prompts. You can find it by tapping the “Create” button and then tapping the sparkle icon in the top right corner of the app.
