YouTube is reportedly rolling out its new AI deepfake detection tool, Likeness Detection, to more creators now. The point is very clear. It’s about helping people find videos that use their faces without their permission. Testing of the tool actually began in 2024, but only with a small group of YouTube Partner Program creators. Then they had journalists and some government officials try it out. Now, the company says all eligible adult creators will have access in the coming weeks.
What is YouTube’s caricature detection tool?
Likeness Detection uses AI to scan videos uploaded to YouTube to determine if someone is using your face with deepfake technology. Essentially, creators will be able to tell if a video is using AI to fake its appearance, so they no longer have to guess whether those weird clips floating around are real or not. Once you turn it on and complete YouTube’s one-time facial recognition, the tool works silently in the background, constantly checking for matches.
Who can access this feature?
The company says the feature will be available to the following YouTube users:
- Creators over 18 years old
- Target YouTube creators
- Who can access YouTube Studio?
The rollout will occur in stages over the next few weeks.
How creators enable tools
YouTube content creators can enable similarity detection through YouTube Studio from their desktop. Below is what you need to do step by step.
Step 1: Open YouTube Studio
Go to the left menu within YouTube Studio.
Step 2: Select “Content Detection”.
Creators will find a “Likes” section under the menu.
Step 3: Start validation
Users must enable YouTube to use similarity detection technology and complete a one-time facial recognition process.
Once set up, the system will automatically monitor videos uploaded to the platform.
Tool detects facial deepfakes, not voice clones
At the moment, we are only looking for videos that visually copy your face. AI voice clones and fake audio cannot yet be detected, but YouTube says that may change as it continues to develop the tool.
Creators can request content to be removed
If Likeness Detection detects content that steals your face, you can review it and ask YouTube to remove it under our privacy guidelines. The idea is to give creators more control over AI-generated content using their own identities.
Concerns about deepfakes continue to grow
With the introduction of new features, deepfake content on YouTube will be seamlessly detected and original content creators can do their job better.
