YouTube has implemented a major AI-driven change in user account settings, with many users now reporting that their profiles have been accidentally converted to minor accounts.
YouTube has introduced new AI capabilities in its age estimation tool designed to better identify accounts belonging to users under the age of 18. This AI tool can accurately identify minor accounts and prevent adult content suggestions. Google has decided to impose some restrictions on these accounts. AI determines whether an account is being used by a child or an adult based on the activity pattern of the account.
User reports unexpected changes
According to a report from 9to5Google, several Reddit users have posted about the new feature. Users whose accounts have been identified as belonging to a minor have received a pop-up box notifying them that their account settings have been changed. It specifically states that age verification fails and that AI tools cannot verify the user's age.
YouTube had previously announced plans to implement technology to identify minor accounts. This is primarily intended to address the issue of minors who create accounts using incorrect age information, and as a result, they are exposed to adult content. YouTube's new advanced AI tools now utilize account activities to distinguish between minor and adult users.
How AI Tools Affect Settings
If the AI tool detects an account used by a minor, it automatically adjusts the settings and converts them to a restricted minor account. However, if an adult user's account is converted incorrectly, you can verify your age and restore it to an adult account.
To verify your age, users must upload a birth certificate or other documents. AI-powered tools look at user activity data, video search, video viewing patterns, and account creation age to determine whether minors are using their accounts.

Regarding screenshots posted by users, YouTube admits that some adult accounts have been accidentally converted to minor accounts. Such users can revert their account to adult status by uploading government ID, selfie or credit card details for verification. If a user fails to verify their age, the account will be treated permanently as a minor account and adult content will be restricted.
