YouTube announced later this year that it is expanding access to Google's VEO Generation AI tool for its app. This will allow more people to use AI to create YouTube shorts clips.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan celebrated the existence of 20 years and highlighted a range of new insights at the event. This highlights the latest data on usage trends, along with new reports looking at the evolution of YouTube content over the long term.
However, the big announcement is the increased access to the Video Tourio tool from Google's VEO text for short pants generation.
According to Mohan:
“We are proud that Veo 3 will be coming to YouTube shorts later this summer. We believe these tools will open up new creative lanes for everyone to explore. ”
You may already be seeing various examples of Veo on various social apps. Many creators generate short snippets based on their own prompts.

YouTube launched VEO 2 access for selected shorts creators in February, but now it has updated it with the latest VEO models, allowing more people to access it.
This means more AI-generated content.
Is that a good thing? So, VEO 3 generated content certainly looks good, but it emphasizes that creativity is still important despite the access to such tools. If you can't come up with a good story or a joke, it doesn't matter if you can't create a sci-fi scene. Before this can be achieved, it appears that we will have to sit on millions of examples of AI-generated junk.
But it's already happening, and the expansion of such a tool offers more opportunities for many creative users who might otherwise not have that exposure.
You should expect to see a lot of garbage too.
In addition to expanding VEO, Mohan also shared updated usage data, including:
- YouTube shorts have been viewed more than 200 billion times a day, up from the 70 billion daily views reported by YouTube last March.
- Viewers currently watch over a billion hours of YouTube content on television every day, with over half of YouTube's top 100 channels generating the majority of views via connected TV (CTV), highlighting the acquisition of traditional television platforms.
- YouTube makes it easier for a billion podcast viewers each month.
- YouTube's AI-powered automatic immersion tool has been used in over 20 million videos so far.
Additionally, YouTube recently released its latest “Cultural and Trends” report. This provides additional insight into major changes to YouTube usage.
The report shows that while short-form videos see many views over time (not surprising), more than 60 minutes of videos on the app also see a significant increase in viewing.

The latter notes are likely to fit the rise of CTV viewing, with more people looking for movie-length films and documentaries on the app, as well as podcasts that have proven to be surprisingly popular on CTV.
The report also examines the emergence of creators in apps and how YouTube is driving opportunities around the world.

There are also charts that reflect the popularity of important video trends.

Notes on the key role games play in the rise of online content:

These are all important trends to keep in mind for creators, and more marketers are looking to leverage the YouTube ecosystem. Understanding how YouTube is evolving and how users are accessing the app is key to maximizing your content strategy with your app.
