Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday that AI development should be driven by international cooperation rather than competition between countries, reaffirming China’s determination to strengthen global cooperation on artificial intelligence.
“China has steadily contributed to global AI governance,” Xi said in a keynote speech at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) to be held in Shanghai, News.Az reported.
“In China, we often say, “One string cannot make music, and one tree cannot make a forest.” AI development should not be a solo performance by one country, but a symphony of international cooperation,” he said.
President Xi said the establishment of WAIC reflects the common efforts of the international community.
“Thanks to our joint efforts, WAIC was born in Shanghai. Our vision a year ago has now become a reality,” he said.
Mr. Xi described the initiative as an important step forward, saying, “This is a major move by China to respond to the call of the Global South and unite the international community to vigorously promote AI development and governance.”
He reiterated that China will continue to work with other countries to advance global AI governance and promote inclusive, cooperative and responsible development of artificial intelligence.
