The registration of women in technical education has led to a rapid increase in India, reaching 17% in 2025 compared to just 4% in 2022. The biggest leap comes from AI and machine learning programs, where women's participation has quadrupled within a year.
India has witnessed a significant increase in women's participation in technical education with a rise in registration to 17% in 2025 compared to just 4% in 2022.
According to a new report from UGC-backed platform college Vidya, the most notable advances are documented in deep technology domains such as artificial intelligence, rapid engineering, cybersecurity, robotics and data science.
The report highlights that AI and machine learning courses are leading this trend. Women's representatives in these programs increased from 5% in 2024 to 20% in 2025, showing a four-fold increase within one year.
“Today, one in five students pursuing a master's degree in AI and ML are female, in contrast to one in 20 people just a year ago,” the study observed.
Overall interest in AI programs has increased by nearly 500% over the past two years, with women emerging as powerful contributors to this growth wave. The report also revealed that women currently form 25% of MCA Cybersecurity registrations and 15% of doctoral candidates in generation AI.
Much of this momentum is driven by students in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, accounting for 70% of the total registration. There is also a significant share from Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, indicating a change in access and aspirations.
“These figures reflect how mindset change, flexible online education, and industry role models awareness help women carve out spaces in areas that shape the future of India's technology.”
