Google DeepMind has appointed Jasjeet Sekhon as chief strategy officer, marking a senior leadership addition as the organization ramps up its focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI).
According to the March 19 announcement, Sekhon will report directly to CEO Demis Hassabis and will oversee strategic initiatives across research, commercialization and policy.
In a post on LinkedIn, Sekhon said he believes DeepMind is well-positioned to lead the development of AGI, describing it as an innovative technology with far-reaching implications for science, medicine, and productivity. He added that responsible development will be central to his approach in his new role.
Mr. Sekhon joins from Bridgewater Associates, where he co-founded AIA Labs in 2023 with co-chief investment officer Greg Jensen. He also served as Chief Scientist and Head of Artificial Intelligence, leading efforts to apply machine learning to financial markets.
His career spans both academia and industry. Mr. Sekhon previously served as a professor of data science, political science, and statistics at Yale University and spent more than a decade at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, he served on the faculty of Harvard University.
Commenting on the appointment, Hassabis described AGI as one of the most important technological changes and stressed the need for careful and responsible deployment. He noted that leadership with both technical depth and strategic perspective is essential as the field evolves.
The move comes as major AI labs ramp up efforts to advance next-generation systems while navigating growing scrutiny over safety, governance, and long-term societal impact.
