It is notoriously difficult to design and implement. Despite the hype and flooding of new frameworks, especially in the generative AI space, turning these projects into actual, concrete values remains a serious challenge for businesses.
Everyone is excited that AI: Boards wants it, pitches executives and developers love technology. But here's a very difficult truth: AI projects just don't fail Like Traditional IT projects, they fail bad. why? Because they inherit all the messiness of a normal software project plus A layer of stochastic uncertainty in which most organizations are not ready to handle.
When you run an AI process, there is a certain level of randomness involved. This means that the same result may not be produced each time. This adds an extra layer of complexity that some organizations are not ready for.
When working on an IT project, I remember the most common problems, unclear requirements, scope creep, silos, or false incentives.

1. There are no clear success metrics (or too many)
If you ask, “What does the success of this project look like?” And get 10 different answers or worse, shrug, that's the problem.
Machine learning projects without sharp success metrics are expensive efforts. And no, “Make the process smarter” is not a metric.
One of the most common mistakes seen in AI projects is trying to optimize for accuracy (or other technical metrics) while trying to optimize costs (or low cost, such as in the case of infrastructure). At some point in your project, you may need to get more data, use more powerful machines, or increase costs for other reasons. This should be done to improve the performance of the model. This is clearly not an example of cost optimization.

A model built under the MLOPS framework and integrated with current corporate systems is essential to achieving successful results. This is especially important for companies that have a lot of legacy systems with a variety of features and features.
How to avoid it:
- Make sure you have engineering capabilities for proper deployment within your organization.

4. Expectations are confusing (AI projects are always “failed”)

Just because you can slap AI on something, you shouldn't do that. Some teams try to force machine learning on all product features, even when rules-based systems and simple heuristics are faster, cheaper and better. And it will probably stimulate more confidence from users.
Overcomplicating things by stacking places where AI is not needed can be difficult to maintain, difficult to explain, and ultimately contribute to a bloated, fragile system that is lacking. Worse, if users don't understand or trust AI-driven decisions, they can erode trust in their products.

AI projects are not just tastes, they are completely different beasts. They blend software engineering and statistics, human behavior, and organizational dynamics. That's why they tend to fail spectacularly more than traditional technology projects.
