Government e-Marketplace (GeM) leverages AI and machine learning to enhance order fulfillment

New Delhi [India]July 11: The Government E-Marketplace (GeM) will use AI and machine learning technology to facilitate ordering on the GeM portal, according to an announcement on Thursday.

The government said GeM is leveraging advanced technologies such as AI and ML to improve its services. Initiatives such as AI-based chatbots and intelligent search capabilities are being developed to improve user experience and streamline operations.

“The GenAI based chatbot is currently deployed in GeM's UAT environment. Q&A for this AI chatbot is under fine-tuning. Production deployment (as beta) is scheduled for the second week of July 2024. The gross merchandise volume (GMV) of orders on GeM portal has doubled in FY24 as compared to last fiscal,” the government said.

GeM has been a game changer for businesses by providing a platform to buy and sell goods and services. Over the years, GeM has grown tremendously and processed millions of orders worth billions of rupees.

To support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), GeM has introduced a new policy to drastically reduce transaction fees, a move aimed at creating more opportunities for SMEs and sellers on the platform.

GeM is also focused on improving seller experience through initiatives such as Seller Connect and GeM SAHAYAK programmes, which aim to streamline the onboarding process, reduce fees and provide training and support to sellers and buyers.

The government further added that it has rolled out a pan-India network of trained, third-party certified and accredited trainers called GeM SAHAYAKs to support sellers and buyers for on-boarding support, expansion of business opportunities and smooth navigation on the GeM portal.

The GeM SAHAYAK programme will formalise, standardise and democratise capacity building and consultancy work in the market. The programme will generate employment opportunities for around 5,000 candidates in the long term while enhancing GeM's grassroots presence.

Additionally, GeM is expanding its offerings with initiatives such as “The Aabhar Collection,” a unique gift basket showcase of indigenous products that not only promotes local artisans and products but also caters to official events and ceremonies.

Overall, GeM's efforts are geared towards strengthening businesses, driving growth and creating an enabling environment for buyers and sellers to thrive in the digital marketplace.

The GMV in FY24 was Rs 4,03,688 crore and in FY23 it was Rs 2,01,113 crore.Since inception, GeM has processed over Rs 2.21 crore orders worth over Rs 9.21 lakh crore.
