From Bigfoot's video blogs to algorithmically created personas, hyperreal AI content redefines the boundaries of digital creators. These influencers are completely virtual personas created using generator AI tools that simulate human characteristics, voice, and behavior. They post lifestyle content, interact with followers, and even secure brand support. As these technologies become more widely available and their results become more reliable, experts warn that they are moving into a new era where the lines separating fiction from reality are becoming increasingly blurred.

The rise of synthetic creativity

Experts at Georgia Tech say that AI hyperrealism surges – content that mimics human emotions, speech and appearance with eerie accuracy is both a technical wonder and a social challenge.

“AIs don't have emotions, but they don't have emotions as humans understand them, but they know how to mimic emotional speech,” says Mark Riedl, a professor at the school of interactive computing. “Once you understand that AI is mimicking us, it's easy to understand how you can create a trusted output that sounds authentic.”

Riedl points out the democratization of video production as a major change. “AI video generation tools and the ability to bypass traditional content channels and post directly to social media have opened the floodgates,” he said.

A recent example is synthetic influencers such as Nowhy Sausage. This is a digitally animated character who has captivated over 30 million followers across multiple social media platforms through short dance videos and brand collaborations. Platforms such as Character.ai allow users to participate in millions of virtual personas designed to simulate conversational and personality traits. The numbers generated for these AI shape how viewers interact with content, marketing, and identity across Instagram, Tiktok, and other social media channels.

The gap between mental health and reality

Munmun de Choudhury, a professor at the school of interactive computing, warns that hyperreal AI content can distort users' perceptions of reality, especially among vulnerable groups.

“This distortion can promote anxiety, exacerbate the problem of body image and self-comparison, and contribute to the broader erosion of trust in epistemology.

Her research shows that social media already blurs the boundaries between authentic self-expression and performance identity. From deepfakes to synthetic personas that resonate emotionally, hyperreal AI content further complicates the user's ability to rate what is real or reliable. Those facing adolescents and mental health challenges may be particularly susceptible.

“Individuals experiencing stress or social isolation may be more likely to believe in deepfakes,” explained De Choudhury. “Content like this often strengthens existing beliefs and bridges gaps in social connections.”

AI content challenges you to understand reliability, trust and digital identity. It also raises questions about the consent, misinformation and psychological consequences of interactions with synthetic personas. Gen Z users often judge AI content with emotional resonance rather than de facto accuracy, while older users often find it difficult to fully detect synthetic cues.

Platforms, persuasions, and misinformation

Riedl emphasizes that AI storytelling tools can be used to shake public opinion through “transportation of stories.” This is a psychological phenomenon in which the audience is unlikely to become immersed in the story and question its truth.

“Storytelling is a compelling way of communication,” he said. “Our brains are tuned into the narrative in a way that can bypass critical thinking.”

Recent incidents highlight the changing landscape. Deepfakes of public figures such as Taylor Swift and Tom Hanks surged in 2025. Over 179 incidents In the first four months of all-over 2024, these deepfakes range from humorous spoofing to fraudulent and explicit content, raising ethical and legal concerns about identity misuse and misinformation. De Choudhury argues that labeling AI-generated content is necessary but insufficient. “Platforms need to invest in user-centric design, digital literacy interventions, and transparency in how algorithms represent such content,” she said.

Stakes are particularly high in mental health communities where reliability and living experience are important. “Users are often overwhelmed or fooled when they encounter synthetic content without clear clues of artificial origin,” she added.

Governance in the globalized age of AI

Milton Mueller, a professor at Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter's School of Public Policy, argues that regulations can be ineffective or counterproductive in decentralized digital ecosystems.

“Generated AI is part of a globalised and distributed digital ecosystem,” Mueller said. “So, which regulators are you talking about and how does it get the leverage needed to control the output?”

The EU AI law requires labeling and imposing sudden fines, but US efforts remain fragmented. The Federal Communications Commission has made the voices generated by RoboCal AI illegal as it faces fines, and several states are seeking criminal penalties for watermarks and political deepfakes. However, experts warn that First Amendment protections complicate enforcement.

Mueller warns that the government is already using AI as a geopolitical tool, which could undermine global cooperation and lead to strategic escalation. “Instead of free trade and establishing general rules, the government is claiming digital sovereignty,” he said.

He advocates addressing misinformation generated by AI through decentralized governance, public discussion, and media literacy rather than centralized regulation or automated control, highlighting that content moderation should be guided by open processes applied after facts and existing legal remedies.

As AI-generated content becomes more refined and broader, researchers say the challenge lies not only in technology protections, but how society adapts. Georgia Tech experts emphasize the need for transparency, interdisciplinary collaboration and public engagement. They say the future of hyperreal media will depend on how well the platforms, policymakers and users navigate its risks and possibilities.
