Google is adding AI capabilities to its apps and services. The company introduced AI message summarization for its in-car infotainment app Android Auto earlier this year, and members of the Times of India technology team recently acquired the feature. If you have a new car or an infotainment system that supports Android Auto, you can update your app to take advantage of the feature.
What is AI message summary?
Introducing AI Messages, introduced by Google earlier this year, the feature instantly shortens long messages to get to the point of the text. Previously, Google Assistant would read the entire message out loud, making it difficult for drivers to follow and understand the entire message.
The feature quickly appeared in Android Auto settings in some markets and recently made its way to in-car infotainment systems with the Android Auto 11.5 update.
How AI message summaries work in Android Auto
With the latest version of Android Auto installed, the app will notify the phone user with a summary of their messages. Some users may also have the option to enable message summaries in their car's infotainment system itself.
Overview only works with long messages (40 words or more), and even if it's enabled, Google Assistant will read short messages and read short messages aloud. If you're using the AI summarization feature, Google will warn you that the summaries may vary slightly.
This feature also allows users to submit AI-generated answers and customize replies before sending.
In multiple cases, we found that the AI-generated summaries lacked specific details but generally conveyed the overall meaning of the message.
