Wärtsilä secures new orders to drive next wave of AI-driven data center growth in the US

AI News

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply engines to power plants to ensure a reliable supply of energy for large-scale data center developments in the United States. The €292 million order, which Wärtsilä is expected to book in the third quarter of 2026, was placed by Liberty Energy, a leading US energy services company based in Denver. For developers, this means faster time-to-power, reduced impact from grid delays, and the ability to scale capacity for rapidly evolving AI workloads. Wärtsilä’s selection highlights the company’s strength in providing power solutions to the fast-growing US data center sector.

AI-driven data center projects require reliable and flexible on-site power capacity that can be rapidly deployed to provide predictable performance and availability. This feature helps reduce risks associated with grid connection delays and power availability constraints.

“The growth of AI data centers is accelerating the demand for critical next-generation on-site power infrastructure,” said Ron Gusek, Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Energy.. “Wärtsilä’s proven engine technology strengthens our integrated power platform and strengthens our ability to provide reliable, high-efficiency power generation that meets the demanding requirements of advanced computing environments.”

Designed for high-performance, AI-driven data centers, Wärtsilä engines deliver the efficiency, reliability, and low water consumption required for critical operations. The Wärtsilä 34SG engine runs on natural gas, a platform proven to operate in demanding high-temperature environments. The company’s modular design enables phased deployment in scalable blocks of up to 1 GW or more, allowing developers to bring capacity online faster while meeting rapidly growing AI-driven demands.

“This significant order reflects Wärtsilä’s continued momentum in the data center sector and highlights our role in providing large-scale engine-based power solutions for mission-critical applications,” commented Risto Pardanius, Vice President, Americas, Wärtsilä Energy. “Wärtsilä’s competitive advantage is typically based on modularity, speed of deployment, reliability and strong operational performance. Engine-based solutions can offer delivery and execution advantages, even in fast-moving projects where time to power is critical.”

Equipment delivery to the site is expected to begin in 2029 and continue until 2030.
