Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is not just calling for more activity on the ground. He is calling for a high-tech overhaul of how Uttar Pradesh deals with crime. Speaking at the Police Manthan conference on Sunday, he told executives it was time to deploy artificial intelligence and advanced financial tracking to dismantle what he described as an internationally-funded religious conversion network. The CM's message was clear. This means forces need to stay ahead of the curve by leveraging modern resources to curb organized rackets that increasingly move into the digital and financial shadows.
State border security was a major focus of the two-day summit. Mr. Adityanath pointed out that the growing threat on the border between Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal requires strict monitoring by police and intelligence agencies. He specifically referred to what happened in Ballampur, identifying it as a “red flag” and indicating that planned and forced conversions should be stopped at the earliest opportunity. The Prime Minister said that apart from the border security strategy against terrorism and drug smuggling, there is now a “zero tolerance zone” in combating these activities, which involves “scrutiny of traceability of funds”.
On the digital front, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern about the rise of deepfakes, disinformation and the dark web. He relentlessly directed the police to identify and shut down fake social media accounts aimed at stirring up caste-based and communal friction. Interestingly, he also warned of the tendency of anti-social elements to misuse the names of “celebrities” to set up new organizations and create chaos. He directed police officers to dig deep into the background of these groups and dismantle their networks without hesitation.
The ultimate goal is to thwart attempts to divide society or create anarchy. Mr. Adityanath praised the police's efforts so far, but argued that intelligence gathering should be more proactive.
