- Cloudflare report says you’re more likely to get ROI from AI after modernizing your app
- For a more comprehensive approach, security must also be incorporated into your strategy.
- Most leaders think their infrastructure is sufficient – don’t be a leader
Cloudflare warns that legacy systems are hindering AI advancements, increasing cybersecurity risks, and creating a so-called “technological glass ceiling,” but that’s okay because an effective modernization strategy can pave the way forward.
According to the company’s latest report, companies that modernize their applications are three times more likely to achieve tangible ROI from their AI tools than those limited by outdated infrastructure.
To date, nearly all (93%) of the more than 2,300 IT, security, product, and engineering leaders surveyed agreed that software updates are the most important factor in improving AI capabilities.
AI is held back by legacy apps and infrastructure
Cloudflare also emphasized the importance of considering security in modernization strategies, noting that companies that consider security are four times more likely to reach advanced AI maturity. Security was defined as a “growth multiplier” rather than just a protection tool.
Even though infrastructure trust is down 85% among businesses that have delayed modernization, they still don’t see that as a motivator to upgrade, and many continue to take a reactive approach, upgrading only after a security breach.
The report also highlights other “costs” associated with operating older technology, including higher maintenance costs, slower innovation, developer talent shortages, and increased exposure to cyber attacks.
Looking ahead, four out of five leaders plan to double the integration of AI within their current application portfolio over the next year, but with 95% believing (potentially incorrectly) that their infrastructure is sufficient for AI development, they may not see the success they hope for.
The most popular applications configured for AI include improving internal workflows (79%), powering content-driven applications (73%), and supporting revenue-generating initiatives (66%).
In short, the key to getting the most out of AI is to build security into modernization from the beginning and not treat it as a reactive last resort.
