The U.S. government on Friday authorized Anthropic to make its Mythos 5 AI model available to select trusted partners, according to a Commerce Department letter seen by Reuters.
The move comes two weeks after the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to cut off access to some of its models due to their potential for deployment in countries of concern, including China and Russia.
As a result, more than 100 companies and institutions, including many Fortune 500 companies, will have access to Mythos 5, said a person familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a letter to Anthropic that both countries have made “significant progress” in addressing risks associated with the model.
Lutnick added that reputable companies and their foreign employees will no longer need an export license for Mythos 5. However, restrictions remain in place for companies not on the approved list.
The letter did not mention Fable 5, but sources told Reuters that the government was working towards permission for the film to be released.
Anthropic, which is pursuing an IPO, has had a rocky relationship with the U.S. government this year. The company refused to allow the U.S. military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems, and the government retaliated by adding the company to a national security blacklist.
