Motorola Solutions, a provider of video security and access control technologies for public safety and corporate customers, offers AI-powered video and access systems to the University of Palermo across sites in and around Palermo.
The deployment includes over 600 cameras in indoor and outdoor locations, providing centralized classroom and facility access control before and after lectures.
“Security of people, facilities and equipment is one of our top priorities. We need to understand the real-time potential tensions to manage access to campus and create a safe environment,” said Professor Pietro Paolo Corso, president of the University of Palermo's extraordinary projects and university digital infrastructure.
AI analysis and appearance search support response
The university uses Motorola Solutions' Avigilon video management software to manage, analyze and process videos from across the network. Advanced analysis can flag anomalous activities such as crowds and smoke, but appearance searches can use physical properties and clothing descriptions to find people and belongings in the footage. The system issues real-time alerts for events such as rogue entries to reduce manual monitoring, minimize false alarms, and supports centralized access control at over 400 gates.
Founded in 1806, the University of Palermo is one of Italy's largest institutions, with around 45,000 students and 1,700 staff in 16 departments and medical and surgical schools. The new deployments will consolidate fragmented legacy video systems into a single platform aimed at improving surveillance and incident response, spanning the department and the president's office.
“We've seen a lot of experience in the world,” said Lorenzo Spadoni, Italian sales director and sales director for Motorola Solutions in the South and Western Europe.
