UNESCO Survey: Fewer than 10% of Schools and Universities Offer Formal Teaching on AI

A new UNESCO global survey of more than 450 schools and universities found that less than 10% have developed institutional policies or formal guidance on the use of generative AI applications.

The survey was prepared for the Ministerial Roundtable on Generative AI and Education hosted by UNESCO on May 25, 2023.

This result demonstrates the uncertainty in responding to the sudden emergence of new and powerful generative AI applications capable of producing human-like output, including summaries, essays, letters, computer programs, art, and more. The technology is now able to score top marks on major standardized tests such as college entrance exams and assessments of qualified professionals such as doctors and lawyers.

The teaching void indicates that the education system is working to keep up with new technologies.

Policies governing the educational use and misuse of new digital technologies are often embodied at the organizational level before being enacted at the higher local, state, and/or national levels. Several institutional-level policies uncovered by UNESCO’s research show that the education system is still finding balance and considering responses. More system-wide policies, policies that apply to large numbers of schools and universities in national and local contexts, can take considerable time to develop and consolidate.

“The findings show that we are still in the green when it comes to emerging and powerful generative AI and education,” said Sobi Tawil, UNESCO Director for the Future of Learning and Innovation. . “Each agency has yet to provide guidance or direction.”
