AI-generated art is becoming more and more popular as criticism of it grows. However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has added further scrutiny to these discussions by sharing an AI-generated video that doubles as a propaganda that features several Harry Potter characters in military uniforms.
The Defense Ministry’s Twitter account, which typically posts updates on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, shared an AI-generated video created by @caton.lab. Even before you hit the play button, the video promises: many By featuring a thumbnail image of Daniel Radcliffe’s version of Harry Potter with a rifle and in military uniform.
“There are many characters in the literary world who dream of joining #UAarmy on the side of good,” wrote the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
Just in case, I’ve also tagged JK Rowling’s Twitter handle.
The video includes Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” and several Harry Potter characters (Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, Dumbledore) in uniforms belonging to different regions of the Ukrainian military. , Hagrid, Arthur Weasley, and the Weasley twins). Other images, such as Harry Potter, also incorporate the respective actor likenesses of characters with varying degrees of success.
The implications used by the Department of Defense are well known. The Ministry of Defense is trying to draw parallels between the fighting in Ukraine and Rowling’s series, and the wizards Harry potter We will be on the Ukrainian side, not the Russian side. Aside from the AI component, it probably fits right in with the early political debate era that some people were using. Harry potter It became a meme due to frequent comparisons to real-world politics.
But here I am fed up for several reasons.people stopped using Harry potter as a major fictitious political touchstone. Harry potter Online discourse has become so toxic that some people (and the authors who wrote it) have turned away from it, and Rowling himself has made a point of explaining which groups are evil. Things got even worse when I tried to use characters from villains. Add public animosity and disdain for AI technology, and you’ve drawn backlash from people who generally support Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Not even the worst version of this video. @Caton.Lab went viral on TikTok by imagining a Bollywood version of Harry Potter with brown-faced actors, but an AI video of ‘Harry Potter characters as Ukrainian soldiers’ set to rock version created another version of “Hedwig’s Theme”.
You can see character blinks (including a rendition of Hermione Granger that wasn’t in the first video) and footage of soldiers marching with military weapons. And the video opens with the riff of one of Hagrid’s most iconic lines: “You’re in the military, Harry.”
