Applications of AI

The UK Maritime Secretary has announced new funding streams for young technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), in shipping and the wider maritime sector.

The Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund is a route to securing £8 million ($9.8 million) from the two-year UK Shipping Emissions Reduction (UK SHORE) programme. In total, the 2022 initiative is worth £206 million ($254 million).

Funding for the 'accelerator' is competitive in nature and the Government Department for Transport said it would be 'managed by delivery partner Innovate UK'.

'Innovating Britain' [is] We are excited to see an industry-led consortium pioneer a smart transport feasibility study that will demonstrate clear commercial routes and positive environmental impacts in the near future.” said part-time director Mike Biddle.

The government outlined the funding stream as a “kickstarter” for preliminary research into the use of AI and robots in the maritime sector, and specified that “matching funding” from the private sector would be needed for the bid to be successful. .

“The Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund will launch feasibility studies to develop smart shipping technologies such as AI, robotics and autonomous vessels. Award-winning projects will receive matching funding leveraging further investment from the private sector. is also required.”

“Making boats smarter using AI and cutting-edge technology is part of our plan to decarbonize shipping,” said Maritime Minister Byron Davis.

Peter Ilott, policy director at the British Chamber of Shipping, said: “Artificial intelligence will play a key role in the greater use of self-driving ships, automation and data analytics alongside the industry's workforce, driving real change to the shipping industry.” It helps reduce gas emissions, improve supply chains and create jobs. ”

Antonio Espingardeiro of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) said the benefits of AI in the maritime sector lie in data processing and analysis.

“As technology becomes more sophisticated, the potential for technology in this field is enormous. It can analyze vast amounts of information, and when combined with machine learning, it can analyze data that would take humans decades to analyze. You can search through records and infer patterns and anomalies in the data.
