UK government leverages AI to increase efficiency and save taxpayers money

Applications of AI

AI tools can help public services work faster and deliver better value to taxpayers.

The UK government has developed an AI tool called Consult that analyzes more than 50,000 responses to the Independent Water Commission review in just two hours. The system matches human precision and saves 75,000 days of work a year, equating to £20 million in labor costs.

For just £240, you can browse answers categorized by key themes. Expert verification of results takes just 22 hours. The AI agreed with human experts 83% of the time compared to 55% of the time with each other, freeing officials to focus on policy rather than administrative tasks.

The technology is also being used to analyze the Scottish Government's consultation on non-surgical cosmetics and the Digital Inclusion Action Plan. This tool, part of the Humphrey suite, helps governments act faster and deliver better value to taxpayers.

Digital Government Minister Ian Murray highlighted the potential of AI to deliver efficient services and reduce costs. Engineers are using insights from Consult and Redbox to develop new tools, including GOV.UK Chat, a generative AI chatbot that will soon be piloted on the GOV.UK app.
