U.S. Department of Energy signs AI collaboration agreement with Big Tech for Genesis mission

Dec. 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Energy said on Thursday it has signed agreements with 24 organizations, including tech giants such as Microsoft (MSFT.O).opens a new tabGoogle (GOOGL.O)opens a new tab and Nvidia (NVDA.O)opens a new tabto advance the Genesis mission.

The mission is a national program designed to use artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific research and strengthen America's energy and security capabilities.

The ministry said the program aims to increase scientific productivity and reduce dependence on foreign technology.

Participants include major cloud and chip providers such as AWS and Oracle (ORCL.N).opens a new tabIBM (IBM.N)opens a new tabIntel (INTC.O)opens a new tabAMD (AMD.O)opens a new tab and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE.N)opens a new tabalongside AI specialists OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI.

Nvidia will provide an accelerated computing platform and AI models for scientific simulations, and Microsoft and Google will provide cloud infrastructure and AI tools to support large-scale research.

Oracle is expected to help build high-performance computing systems and Palantir (PLTR.O).opens a new tab Provides data integration and analysis capabilities. Startups Cerebras and Groq supply advanced AI chips optimized for scientific workloads.

OpenAI has signed a memorandum of understanding under the OpenAI for Science initiative to deploy frontier AI models into national laboratory research environments and provide tools and workflows to DOE scientists.

Anthropic will provide its Claude models and provide the DOE with a dedicated engineering team to develop AI agents, Model Context Protocols (MCPs), and specialized Claude “skills” for national laboratories.

The partnership will focus on AI models for a wide range of applications, from nuclear energy and quantum computing to robotics and supply chain optimization.

The Genesis mission will bring high-performance computing systems to Argonne National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory, building on previous collaborations between DOE and burgeoning industry.

The department said it plans to expand its partnerships with academia and nonprofit organizations and hopes this effort will significantly accelerate scientific discovery.
