Trump News Summary: President criticizes AI companies that adhere to safety guardrails; US military calls for lifting | Trump administration

AI For Business

Donald Trump said Friday that he will direct all federal agencies to “immediately cease” the use of Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology.

The Pentagon and Antropic reached an impasse as the agreement expired Friday afternoon, with neither side willing to back down. The Pentagon has required AI companies to loosen ethical guidelines for their systems or face serious consequences.

For weeks, U.S. defense officials have called for unfettered access to the capabilities of the company’s Claude AI system, saying it will help protect the country, while Anthropic has resisted allowing its products to be used in mass surveillance or autonomous weapons systems that can kill people without human intervention.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a statement this week: “Anthropic understands that military decisions are made by the Department of the Army, not private companies. We have never objected to specific military operations, nor have we ever sought to limit the use of our technology on an ad hoc basis.” “However, we believe that in limited cases, AI could undermine rather than protect democratic values.”

Trump clearly didn’t appreciate Anthropic’s red line. “We are the ones who decide the fate of our country, not an out-of-control radical left-wing AI company run by people who have no idea what the real world is,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
