Today, AI is not only a reality, but it is seamlessly integrated into many aspects of daily life and industry around the world.
Across the world, AI has transformed sectors as diverse as healthcare, finance, transportation, and entertainment. Innovations such as machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, and computer vision have revolutionized the way businesses operate, how we interact with technology, and how we make decisions.
This tech wave is also making an impact in Africa, where the continent faces unique challenges, including a lack of infrastructure and differing levels of technological development, but where AI adoption is gaining momentum.
But not all countries are equally prepared for AI adoption: some are progressing rapidly, while others are still laying the groundwork.
The International Monetary Fund's recent AI Readiness Index (AIPI) report revealed the level of AI readiness in 174 countries. The AIPI is comprised of four key dimensions that are likely to contribute to the smooth adoption of AI: digital infrastructure, human capital, technological innovation, and legal framework.
Each dimension is then calculated by normalizing and averaging a rich set of sub-indicators, such as the presence of relevant digital infrastructure, sustained human capital investments, comprehensive STEM expertise, labor and capital mobility, a vibrant research and development ecosystem, and the adaptability of the legal framework to digital business models.
Notes: The index incorporates several perception-based indicators that reflect individuals' subjective assessments and experiences, and therefore should not be seen as a ranking but rather as a guide for policymakers to identify areas for improvement.
Below are the top 10 countries most ready for AI adoption in Africa in 2024.
