Music has always played a central role in Timbaland’s life.
The producer first gained fame in the 1990s by helping shape the sounds of artists like Ginuwine and Aaliyah. As a child, he began making beats in his bedroom and performing as DJ Timmy Tim.
After Timbaland was accidentally shot by a co-worker as a teenager, leaving him partially paralyzed and temporarily losing the use of his arm, Timbaland was forced to learn an improvised DJ technique of using his shoulders to scratch records.
About the remix of Babybel’s “I’m Your Baby” track
Timbaland recently partnered with Babybel, a snack cheese brand known for its little wax-coated wheels. As part of the exclusive Mini Wax Tracks Music Drop, he remixed Brando’s song “I’m Your Baby,” creating both pop and EDM versions of the track.
“I think what drew me to it was the chorus. It was so catchy,” Timbaland said.
He added, “I was just explaining that one of my favorite commercials back in the day was ‘Conjunction Junction, What’s Your Role?’ It was a repeating chorus that you don’t hear anymore in commercials. ‘I’m Your Be…’ “When I heard ‘Ebby,’ I felt like I needed to do something different that was alive when I wasn’t. Timbaland talks about how to approach AI in music
Timbaland’s approach to music has always included experimentation with sound and production techniques, and his perspective on AI follows a similar philosophy.
“You have to understand, I was the guy who put crickets on records and I was a baby,” he said. “People beat me up. Behind closed doors, executives were saying things like, ‘You can’t play records that have weird sounds on them.’ But my whole thing was that music is all around us. The birds chirping, the wind blowing, all of that.”
Timbaland recalled that early in his career, he had limited access to instruments and equipment.
“We didn’t have a lot of privilege growing up. Our parents didn’t have a lot of privilege either. Let me give you an example. This is a song with Nelly called ‘Give It to Me.’ [Furtado]me and Justin [Timberlake]it was all buckets, rakes, spoons and drums. Because I was thinking about how I would make music if my mother couldn’t afford this keyboard. “All this music is inside me, so what I did was go back to the essence of the music that exists around me,” he said.
Timbaland said he sees AI as one of the tools artists have to turn their ideas into reality.
