TikTok unleashes AI agents on advertising platform

AI News

Running a campaign on TikTok meant media buyers manually setting up creatives, adjusting bids, and changing budgets within the dashboard. TikTok wants an artificial intelligence agent to own its creations.

At its 6th Global Advertising Product Summit held on Tuesday (May 12), the platform announced the TikTok Ads Model Context Protocol (MCP). The system connects an AI agent directly to TikTok’s advertising platform, allowing it to plan, launch, and optimize campaigns without human intervention. Jose Villalobos, global head of product marketing for Platform Advertising and Core Advertising, said the goal is to combine automation, control and AI to improve the performance of advertising partners, Digiday reported.

What MCPs do for advertising platforms

MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in late 2024. PYMNTS reported that MCP enables AI models to connect to live business tools and systems, allowing them to move from passive assistants to active agents capable of retrieving data, updating records, and performing actions within approved boundaries. Before MCP, each connection between an AI system and a business application had to be custom built. The protocol standardizes its integration layer.

Applying MCP to advertising turns the connection between the AI agent and the advertising platform into a structured, programmable interface. Setting up campaigns, adjusting bids, reallocating budgets, and changing targeting are all actions agents can perform directly, rather than tasks that humans must perform from the dashboard.

It’s not just TikTok. Google has released the open source Google Ads MCP server. Meta has launched a service that allows advertisers to manage their advertising accounts through Claude and ChatGPT without ever touching the ads manager. Amazon did the same. Digiday reports that the direction is consistent across all major platforms: building infrastructure that allows AI agents to handle the operational work of running campaigns, rather than human media buyers.

Control your connection, control your data

Adweek reports that TikTok’s announcement also includes support for third-party API agents, which will allow advertisers to build custom infrastructure for their own workflows on top of TikTok’s ad system. This interoperability extends the platform beyond its own AI tools into what Adweek describes as an AI-native advertising infrastructure.

Ad tech expert Shirley Marshall told Digiday that what’s really driving the MCP race among the major platforms is the data angle. Platforms that route agent traffic through third-party MCPs hide what agents are querying, what they are comparing it to, and what is driving conversions. In an agent advertising environment, that signal is the most valuable data the platform has. Large platforms are moving to control their own MCP connections before data flows elsewhere.

Marshall said the division is along scale. Large platforms are competing to set their own MCP standards. Everyone else competes to not depend on them.

TikTok combined the launch of MCP with broader advertising product updates in TikTok World. TopReach combines TopView and TopFeed placements into one purchase. TopReach Sequencing allows advertisers to retain the first two high-visibility placements to run a continuous narrative. Search Hubs places brand pages at the top of TikTok search results. Creator AI Search within TikTok One interprets your campaign summary and automatically displays relevant creators.

The company also integrated ByteDance’s video generation model, Dreamina Seedance 2.0, into its Symphony AI suite and added profit optimization features to TikTok Shop’s GMV Max.

TikTok World comes four months after the platform’s future in the United States was decided through a U.S.-China deal that ended months of legal uncertainty. Three new executives joined Villalobos to lead the stage, including Isobel Sita Ramsden, who was appointed global head of business marketing last month.
