Ever wondered if ChatGPT is a real person you can talk to? Call Annie is a new app that allows you to have one-on-one video-based conversations with ChatGPT-powered bots. The app features a female avatar who can have normal conversations with the user.
Its App Store listing describes a variety of conversation topics that an “AI friend” is capable of. For example, it can be used to understand complex subjects, learn new languages, improve general knowledge, prepare for interviews, and more. The list goes on to say, “Speaking face-to-face in real time feels more natural and faster than typing and reading text.”
Several users have spoken to bots powered by ChatGPT and uploaded video recordings to the web. There doesn’t seem to be a significant delay in responding, but the bot’s voice in recordings shared by users sounds robotic.
I don’t mean to be an AI doomer too much, but when I made a FaceTime call with an AI avatar powered by near-real-time ChatGPT, it was… surprisingly human.

In a Reddit post, the app’s developer said the original image of Annie’s face was created using Midjourney. However, facial expressions are animated in real time using on-device processing to match the generated audio. As such, the free-to-use app currently relies on Apple’s Neural Engine, whose video calling mode is only available on iPhone 12 and newer models.
Users with older iPhone models are limited to audio-only calls. However, Call Annie is also compatible with Mac computers powered by Apple’s M-series chips and running macOS 13 or later.
Bots can also assist users in their travel adventures by providing a variety of information, such as local customs and must-see attractions. However, when it comes to privacy, the developer claims that all conversations with AI bots are kept confidential. while replying to the user they said Voice recordings are not saved, only transcripts are saved. Multiple Reddit users reported that the bot claimed “name is Samantha” when called by the name Annie, suggesting it is the successor to an older chatbot named Samantha.
