The AI vs. Human debate is the wrong question in cybersecurity: CISO

Finding the right balance between AI and humans, rather than choosing one over the other, will be important for cybersecurity and future channels, Diana Kelley, CISO at Noma Security, tells CRN’s Security or Else! Podcast.

Noma Security’s Diana Kelley says viewing the future of cybersecurity as a choice between AI and humans misses the point.

In an interview for the second episode of the new CRN video series “Security or Else!,” hosted by senior editor Kyle Alspach, Kelly talked about the importance of finding the right balance between AI and humans.

According to Kelly, CISO of AI security startup Noma Security and formerly of Microsoft and Protect AI (acquired by Palo Alto Networks), getting the balance right, rather than choosing between AI-driven security and human-driven security, will be critical to cybersecurity and future channels.

This is especially true as attackers are already using AI to automate attacks, discover vulnerabilities and lower technical barriers to entry, requiring defenders to embrace the same tools while keeping humans involved in the most important decisions, Kelly said.

“If attackers have these tools, we as defenders need to have these tools,” Kelly said in an interview with Security or Else!.

At the same time, the term “artificial intelligence” can give the misleading impression that models are somehow more intelligent independently of humans, Kelly said.

In reality, model training has improved, but this is largely due to human work and the use of human-generated data.

“Models are better trained, and in most cases, a lot of that training comes from humans,” Kelly says. “What are they being trained on? Data. Human-generated data.”
