Ho Chi Minh City – The fifth edition of HCM City’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Challenge competition for AI-powered solutions and products is accepting applications until July 31st.
Speaking at a kick-off event in the city last Friday, Vo Minh Thanh, deputy director of the city's Department of Information and Communications, said the competition aims to promote scientific research activities and innovative start-up projects in AI applications, contributing to the effective implementation of the city's digital transformation strategy and facilitating the smart city building process.
“The project will encourage individuals and research groups from Japan and abroad to propose AI-powered solutions that can help the local government address current social issues in the city,” he said.
According to organizers, the contest is aimed at information technology students, AI professionals across the country and overseas Vietnamese.
It is divided into two tables: Table A for university students and young people, and Table B for high school students.
There are two categories: AI Challenge and AI Solution.
The AI-Challenge is exploring AI-based solutions for deriving events from visual data.
AI-Solution seeks leading solutions and products based on artificial intelligence technologies in key socio-economic sectors such as production, business, transportation, finance, healthcare, education, tourism, agriculture and community contribution.
The competition format is similar to international competitions such as the Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) and Video Browser Showdown (VBS).

Organizers are encouraging participants to attach files, photos, videos and links relevant to their work.
The winners are selected by a jury made up of experts and scientists from universities and associations.
The number of prizes will be decided by the organizers and judges, with the total prize money amounting to VND200 million (US$7,855).
Funds for the prizes will come from a variety of sources.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held in October.
Winners will be provided with support to connect with experts and scientists to continue perfecting their products and to present their solutions and products to potential organizations and companies.
They will also have the opportunity to participate in the 13th International Symposium on Information and Communications Technology (SoICT 2024), and the winner will be presented with an opportunity to participate in the 2025 ACM Multimedia Conference to be held in Ireland in October 2025.
Within the framework of the competition, a number of side events will be organized, including a scientific conference called “Ho Chi Minh City AI Research and Development Program – Elevating Talent, Building the Future”, meetings between city leaders and top students of information technology and AI, and training to raise awareness and skills on AI and digital transformation in the city.
This year's contest is organised by the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training, Department of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City Communist Youth Union, Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association and Youth Centre for Science and Technology Development.
Last year's contest attracted 631 teams and over 2,700 participants from Japan and abroad.
