Elon Musk isn’t just talking about AI chips. Tesla’s CEO now invites engineers interested in the job to contact the company via email, and personally holds design meetings twice a week.
On Saturday night, Musk posted on X asking for candidates to join Tesla’s AI chip engineering team. He asked candidates to email Tesla three bullet points demonstrating their “exceptional ability.”
“We are particularly interested in applying cutting-edge AI to chip design,” he said.
Musk said in the post that the company aims to “produce a new AI chip design every 12 months.”
“We ultimately expect to produce more chips than all other AI chips combined,” he added.
The current chip in Tesla cars is known as AI4, and Musk said the company is “getting closer to retiring AI5” while starting work on AI6.
“These chips will profoundly change the world in a positive direction, saving millions of lives through safer driving and delivering advanced healthcare to all through Optimus,” Musk added. Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robot project.
Mr. Musk is ramping up Tesla’s chip ambitions. In July, the company signed a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung to manufacture Tesla’s A16 chips at a new factory in Texas.
Posted by Tesla Based in Palo Alto, California Engineering roles for the AI Hardware team include recruiting Physical Design Engineers and Signal and Power Integrity Engineers.
Physical design engineer jobs require candidates with at least 10 years of experience in designing and building integrated circuits, also known as chips. This role includes designing, building, and integrating components of Tesla’s AI chips. The position will pay approximately $152,000 to $264,000 annually, plus cash and stock compensation and benefits, according to the publicly traded company.
The Signal and Power Integrity Engineer role will support the development of next-generation AI chips and systems for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots. This position focuses on chip testing and validation. The job pays between about $120,000 and $318,000 a year, with cash and stock bonuses and benefits, according to the listing.
Musk is ‘deeply involved’ in chip design and meetings
In a post on X on Saturday, Musk said he is “deeply involved in chip design” and meets with the engineering team “every Tuesday and Saturday.”
He added: “Saturday’s meeting is short-term and will no longer be necessary in the coming months when AI5 is phased out.”
Mr. Musk has long been known for immersing himself in the day-to-day work of his company. Musk said in July that he would personally oversee Samsung’s new semiconductor manufacturing plant in Texas. The plant, located in Taylor, Texas, is expected to open in 2026.
“This is an important point. I will personally take action to accelerate the pace of progress,” Musk said on X, adding that the factory is “conveniently located not far from my home.”
During Tesla’s Model 3 launch in 2018, Musk said he slept on the floor of the company’s factory. After taking over Twitter (now X) in 2023, he changed the company name and restructured the entire organization.
