The Tamil Nadu Forest Service shared a video of a family of elephants traveling across the railway tracks of Madukkarai in Coimbatore. The department said the intersection has been made possible by an AI-powered early warning system that has recorded 6,592 safe passages so far.

Clips taken in Madukkarai show the elephant walking calmly through the track.

In a post on X, the department said: “TN proves that it is possible when technology meets its commitment. In Madukkarai, an AI-powered early warning system ensures zero elephant deaths on railway tracks since November 2023. 12 towers | 24 cameras | 6,592 safe crossings | 25 elephant staff can be seen.

Supriya Sahu, an officer of the Indian Administration (IAS), reposted the video as she called it a worthy tribute on the Elephant Day of the World.

“A better homage to the elephant on #Worldelephantday than guaranteeing their right to a safe life,” she wrote.

Sahu added that since November 2023, the system has prevented the death of all elephants, with 12 towers and 24 thermal cameras monitoring around the clock.

A total of 6,592 elephants are safely crossed thanks to the efforts of forest rangers, truck watchers, guards, loco pilots and executives. “Let's do more of these interventions to ensure the long-term survival of these beautiful elephant families,” she said.
