Spotify wants to give you more control over the music you love. We're also testing an AI feature called Prompted Playlists to help listeners personalize their experience.
Music streaming services, like most online media services, have vast catalogs of recommendations and suggested content. This is typically driven by an algorithm and depends on a variety of factors, including where the user is from, trends, and more.

The company wants to change that with Spotify Prompted Playlist. As you may know, Spotify already has an AI DJ, but it looks like the new experience is more personalized. Prompted Playlists, as the name suggests, is an AI feature that analyzes your prompts and acts on them. Users can specify the type of music they want to listen to, and the AI also looks at their listening history to find songs that match their tastes and queries. It then generates a playlist tailored to the user's request.

Examples Spotify gives include “music from top artists from the past five years, including deep songs you've never heard before.” Or, “30 minutes of high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 5K run, keeping a steady pace, then listening to relaxing songs to cool down, including music from the year's biggest movies and most talked-about TV shows that suit my tastes.” Those are some complex prompts, but if you're not sure what to ask the AI, tap Ideas to see some suggested prompts.

The streaming service says you can use Prompted Playlists to curate Discover Weekly just the way you want it. This allows users to discover new music genres and artists they like, and allows artists to gain new fans. A video demo on Spotify's website shows how prompt playlists work.

Not only is it a hand-picked playlist, it also updates automatically. That's certainly cool.

However, it is not available to everyone yet, and certainly not to free users. Spotify's Prompt playlists are currently only available in New Zealand and only to users with a premium subscription. Because it's still in beta.
Yesterday, Spotify launched music videos in the US and Canada. For US users, a price increase is planned for early 2026.
I think Prompted Playlists makes good use of AI.
