In South Korea, the competition to secure know-how in artificial intelligence (AI), which is attracting the most attention in this field, is intensifying the competition to acquire human resources in AI and machine learning.
This is because generative AI not only promises more efficient development, but also more immersive content.
Industry insiders announced Sunday that Crafton has hired an AI engineer specializing in deep learning starting June 1 to develop a life simulation game that incorporates AI technology. Players live within the virtual reality game and perform tasks such as finding jobs and making friends.
The genre is headlined by the Sims series, which has grossed over $5 billion, and is expected to benefit most after the dawn of the age of augmented reality and the metaverse, which spans virtual and augmented reality.
Crafton is also developing a virtual friend using generative AI as a game character, aiming for commercial release next year. It not only communicates with the player through voice and text, but also displays facial expressions and actions that match the context of the chat, and the AI moves like a real human and participates in the game.
A Crafton official said, “We are currently considering which games to apply the Virtual Friend technology to.” “A character with this technology can serve as a guide for beginners.”
Netmarble, which focuses on popularity-oriented mobile games, is also looking for AI talent in areas such as simulation and audio processing to improve the production efficiency of voice and animation with generative AI.
NCSoft Corp. established an AI development department in 2011 and focused on language translation. We also have our own large-scale language model that underlies our generative AI, which we plan to apply to in-game coding and game design this year.
Smilegate is recruiting machine learning experts, having previously secured AI-based technology to generate voices and facial expressions for game characters.
