March 2nd (Asia Today) — Lee Jae-myung and Lawrence Wong agreed on Monday that the two countries will aim to expand cooperation in the fields of advanced technology and energy, pursue an artificial intelligence cooperation framework, and strengthen bilateral trade ties.
At the Singapore summit, the two leaders pledged to make AI a central pillar of economic cooperation and to begin negotiations to upgrade existing free trade agreements.
According to the presidential office, the proposed AI cooperation framework will foster joint research, investment and industrial innovation, including the development of so-called physical AI applications and the widespread use of AI in daily life.
The two countries signed five memoranda of understanding, including cooperation on science and technology cooperation, AI and digital technology in public safety, intellectual property cooperation, joint use of environmental satellites, and small modular reactors (SMRs).
They also agreed to start talks to modernize the free trade agreement, with a focus on supply chains, the green economy, trade facilitation, and aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul services.
Based on this agreement, the two countries plan to expand policy cooperation and personnel exchanges in areas such as quantum technology, SMR, and space and satellite development. They also pledged to share information on AI policy in public safety and support promising companies in related fields.
In a joint press statement, Lee said they hope to “further strengthen existing cooperation in trade, investment and infrastructure fields,” while also expanding cooperation into “future-oriented areas such as AI, nuclear energy and advanced science and technology.”
