Smart Detect AI from Smart Applications International Ltd, a recently launched claims intelligence platform, helps transform healthcare claims management by combating fraud, waste, and fraud.
This will reduce inefficiencies and strengthen the overall financial health of Africa’s health systems. Health insurance claims are at the core of every patient interaction, and as claims continue to grow, hidden risks such as fraud, waste, and abuse remain a major challenge.
These losses are often caused by complex fraud schemes hidden within seemingly normal insurance claims and are difficult to detect using traditional rules-based systems.
While most claim denials are preventable, they are often caused by issues such as incomplete documentation, incorrect coding, or discrepancies that are only identified after submission, impacting both revenue predictability and operational efficiency.
Smart Detect AI addresses these challenges by introducing a new layer of intelligence to the claims process. The solution uses machine learning, behavioral analytics, and clinical logic to analyze claims before and after submission to identify risk, improve accuracy, and enhance decision-making.
For insurers, Smart Detect AI enables post-claim risk detection by identifying anomalous claims patterns, potential member-provider collusion, unusual visit frequencies, clinical discrepancies, and location anomalies. This enables early detection of hidden risks, targeted investigations, and reduced financial exposure. For healthcare providers, the platform enhances pre-submission claims validation by flagging errors such as missing documentation, coding errors, benefit discrepancies, unreasonable steps, and incomplete clinical rationale.
Smart Detect AI assesses patterns across the billing ecosystem across providers, patients, and time. This enables deeper insight into billing behavior, patient progress, and interaction patterns.
Barbara Simiyu, head of data analytics at Smart Applications International, who spoke at the launch, said health systems handle claims at scale, but significant risks often remain hidden. “Smart Detect AI introduces a new level of intelligence that enables stakeholders to move from reactive to proactive claims intelligence, which enhances transparency, improves efficiency, and ultimately protects the integrity of the health system,” she said.
The solution was officially announced at the 5th Smart Summit.
