Singapore's filmmaker Jacques Neo has used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create a new music video in collaboration with moon moons around the country to recreate images of Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Quang Ye-Yew and his voice.
65-year-old Neo posted a music video for the song, We are Singaporeon social media on August 18th.
Referring to Prime Minister Lawrence Won's National Day Rally speech on August 17, Neo wrote in Chinese:
Neo said in a daily Chinese night interview Shin Min Daily News That it took him about a month to complete the entire song.
“It took me two or three weeks to write my own lyrics and conceptualize them. The arrangements, compositions and vocals were generated by AI,” he added. “The biggest challenge was that AI produced many versions of the song, each one sounded great, so I had to choose the one that I was most pleased with.
Images generated by the late Lee's AI appeared in the final scene of the music video. Neo used AI to recreate Lee's iconic voice. He said:
Neo said he believes many will not forget Lee's contributions to Singapore.
“Singapore is now celebrating the SG60 with happiness. I always feel that the prosperity, progress and global position of the country is inseparably linked to his tireless efforts at the time,” he said. “Use AI to get him to join in the celebration.
Neo also incorporated the AI-generated image of historic footage, the faces of artists such as Terence Cao, Collin Chee, Dawn Yeoh, and the videos, as well as the Cabinet Minister of Singapore.
“In fact, what I was hoping to do was use AI to generate a version where internationally renowned Singaporean singers like Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, A-Do, Kit Chan, Tanya Chua and others sang the song together,” says Neo. “I think it's very interesting, more perfect and more meaningful.”
The filmmakers said they tried to use AI to generate images of these singers, but the results were very good. However, he has not asked for permission from the singer and decided not to use them due to the tight production schedule.
Neo's music video received mixed reactions on social media. While some netizens praised the innovation and courage of using AI in videos, others questioned whether it was rude to use Lee's AI-generated images.
Neo said Sinmin He continues to use AI to create songs and incorporate AI technology into filmmaking. He did so for his latest film I want to be a boss, It opened in January at the Singapore Cinema.
He believes that AI will support humans in many areas of the future, but humans are still in control.
“Many people fear AI, but I don't think we need to fear it. AI is not something that replaces humans. Only people who don't know how to use it.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
