Jivar Soulati, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California and lead author of a new opinion paper in Trends in Cognitive Science, emphasizes that human diversity in reasoning and expression is one of society’s greatest strengths.
When millions of users rely on the same AI systems to generate ideas and edit text, natural differences in communication and problem-solving can gradually disappear. LLMs often produce predictable language patterns, encouraging users to adopt similar ways of thinking over time.
AI adoption is rapidly increasing worldwide
Concerns grow as the use of chatbots rapidly spreads. Pew Research reports that one-third of Americans used ChatGPT last year, and that number will double in 2023. Almost two-thirds of teenagers interact with chatbots on a regular basis, often daily.
Organizations are also rapidly adopting AI. A Stanford University study found that 78% of companies will be using AI in 2024, up from 55% the year before, highlighting how these tools are becoming integrated into both work and daily life.
Why human creativity still matters
According to CNET, experts warn that standardized thinking can undermine pluralism, the principle that diverse perspectives strengthen society and lead to better problem-solving. If AI subtly shapes the norms of communication, it could influence what is considered “correct” inference or reliable opinion, even to people who do not personally use AI tools.
While AI remains a powerful resource for productivity and learning, researchers emphasize that protecting human individuality, creativity, and diverse perspectives is essential to ensuring innovation and adaptive thinking in an AI-driven world.
