Depending on who you ask, agent AI is both revolutionary and risky.
on the other hand, AI agent — Specialized AI systems that automate specific tasks and work together in tandem can completely change the way technical teams work. On the other hand, all AI agents have potential vulnerabilities.
Jaishree Subramania, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing sail pointThere are two main questions that all security team leaders are asking themselves today. “How do we respond?” and “How do we protect all these agents that we have in place?”
“We are in a unique position to answer both at the same time,” Subramanian said.
Sail point function
sail point is the leader in cloud enterprise identity security, helping enterprises manage and secure the identities of not only human users but also machines across applications, data, cloud systems, and infrastructure.
Subramania is part of the SailPoint team, which launched innovative security products this year. The company's latest product, Agent Identity Security, was announced in October and gives customers access to security tools for deploying agent AI systems at scale.
Identity security products are needed now more than ever.
In September, First large-scale agent AI attack China launched The campaign infiltrated approximately 30 financial companies and government agencies around the world with little human oversight.. This event was alarming for experts and policymakers alike, but for the SailPoint team it proved they were on to something.
“In most companies, machines already have more IDs than people,” Subramania says. “Traditional governance built on static policies cannot handle this complexity.”
Inside SailPoint's strategy for protecting AI agents at scale
Mitra Mahdavian, senior vice president of corporate strategy and product operations at SailPoint, explained that Agent Identity Security allows customers to leverage SailPoint as a single platform for consistent governance across humans, machines, and agents.
“Customers can extend SailPoint's identity governance capabilities to agent identity by onboarding AI agents, tracking human ownership, managing associated service accounts, and managing the agent lifecycle,” said Mahdabian.
Agent Identity Security was partially inspired by another product that was launched seven months ago. Harbor Pilot is a set of AI agents that automate identity security tasks, simplify workflows, and provide insights through generated AI prompts.
As Subramania explained, while helping customers improve their operations with AI agents, they found that those same customers were deploying thousands of AI agents with little governance.
“Our research shows that 82% of organizations already using AI agents struggle with fundamental questions: Who owns this agent? What does it have access to? How can we enforce least privilege?” she said.
SailPoint AI agent Harbor Pilot startup performance
- Achieved 50% customer adoption within 30 days of launch
- Workflow creation time reduced from hours to minutes
After deploying Harbor Pilot, SailPoint made the strategic choice to expand its platform to cover AI agents as a separate type of identity security. According to Subramania, this meant a significant but necessary investment in research and development.
“Our most important decision was to fully commit to agent AI, both as a customer-facing tool and as an identity type,” said Subramania. “Both sides of the AI governance challenge need to be secured and addressed.”
Luckily for them, SailPoint is more than adequate.
How SailPoint's AI leadership predicts a rapidly expanding market
According to SailPoint research, by 2028, one-third of all enterprise applications will include agent AI, a significant increase from just 1% in 2024.
Subramania explained that the SailPoint strategy combines security insights and controls into one panel.
“Through the SailPoint platform, enterprises will be able to manage humans and non-humans within a single unified platform,” said Subramania. “We are pioneering a solution to manage AI agents as a new identity type that most enterprises struggle to manage.”
The SailPoint platform enables teams to move from reactive firefighting to proactive risk management. This is a business strategy that is likely to pay off in the coming years.
How SailPoint engineering stays ahead of the rapidly changing AI landscape
So how is the SailPoint team responding to this unprecedented speed of movement?
Fuad Rashid, senior vice president of engineering, has a strategy focused on empowerment and experimentation.
“The technology continues to evolve so rapidly that we could see something even better coming out within weeks,” Rashid said. “At SailPoint, we decided to allow our team to experiment with different tools to stay on top of the latest technology.”
While some tools will be standardized across the engineering organization, Rashid said management will continue to provide teams with the flexibility, space and budget to experiment with new tools as they become available.
“These are exciting times, and Sailpoint is uniquely positioned to capitalize on all of this momentum,” added Mahdabian.
Rashid expects the market to expand rapidly over the next year as customers navigate the complexities of AI implementation.
“The launch of AIS earlier this year was an important step, and our comprehensive roadmap further solidifies our position as a leader in delivering secure and observable AI agent implementations,” said Rashid.
