Presumably debuting at WWDC, Safari users will soon find it easier to create groups of tabs with a test version for 27 operating systems that uses AI to group tabs.
Apple introduced Tab Groups in Safari 15 in 2021, allowing users to organize and save groups of frequently used browser tabs. Five years from now, another change to this functionality is planned.
In the test version of Safari for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, tab groups have been updated to include automatic organization features, Mark Gurman said in his “Power On” newsletter. bloomberg. The top-center button for navigating between tab groups has a new test option aptly titled “Organize Tabs.”
This feature is used to instruct Safari to automatically group tabs or match them manually by the user. When selected, Safari displays “Tabs are grouped by topics you view.”
Apple doesn’t seem to have identified this as a feature that uses Apple Intelligence, but it does use some form of AI. This seems similar in concept to the Reminders feature, which allows you to group items on a list into categories, such as product types on a shopping list.
Part of a broader OS update
The Safari update will be one of a number of software changes being introduced as part of the new 27th generation operating system, scheduled to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 in June. And that’s not the only AI-related feature that appeared in the pre-WWDC report.
So far, there have been rumors that iOS 27 will allow users to choose their preferred AI model and expand on existing ChatGPT-based features. Visual Intelligence has also been updated for iOS 27 and moved to the Camera app for easier access.
The Photos app will also see AI changes on top of its existing cleanup features. This includes expanding, reframing, enhancing, and contextually editing images.
