Purpose-built AI models give industrial teams instant insight and control at the edge, offline, and wherever work happens
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Rockwell Automation Company (NYSE:ROK), one of the world’s largest companies specializing in industrial automation and digital transformation, today announced a breakthrough that brings generative AI directly to the industrial edge. Rockwell is introducing NVIDIA Nemotron Nano integration. This is a purpose-built small language model (SLM) that is optimized for: FactoryTalk® Design Studio™ and other Rockwell products, taking a major step forward in real-time intelligence for industrial teams.

Rockwell collaborates with NVIDIA to leverage open source. Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2 model and NVIDIA NeMo Provides edge-based generative AI capabilities specifically designed for industrial environments. Nemotron Nano distillation technology provides the foundation for SLM that can run in edge environments using less space and power than traditional data centers. By fine-tuning models using data used in FactoryTalk Design Studio Copilot, Rockwell is creating solutions that represent new possibilities for industrial automation professionals.
The model is built to be used across design, development, production, and maintenance workflows and works seamlessly with HMI panels, appliances, desktop IDEs, servers or private cloud environments. It supports both edge and air-gap deployments and offers improved inference, predictability, and responsiveness compared to other SLMs.
Initial evaluations show step-change values with new inference, parallelism, and major performance breakthroughs that enable this model to stand out in the SLM space. The results highlight that this model is strongly suited for industrial edge scenarios where instant responsiveness, data security, and offline operation are essential.
“Industrial automation requires AI that operates reliably at the edge and in secure environments,” said Tony Carrara, Business Manager, FactoryTalk Design Studio, Rockwell Automation. “By using FactoryTalk Design Studio data to fine-tune open NVIDIA Nemotron models, we create solutions that can be deployed anywhere and help our customers accelerate their workflows without sacrificing predictability or control.”
“Small language models like NVIDIA Nemotron Nano bring real-time intelligence to where decisions are made, from the factory floor to the power grid,” said Joey Conway, senior director of generative AI software for the enterprise at NVIDIA. “NVIDIA Nemotron Nano enables companies using Rockwell FactoryTalk Design Studio to deploy AI in environments with limited space and power, extending AI from the data center to the heart of real-world operations.”
This innovation will be showcased at: Automation Fair 2025will be held in Chicago from November 17th to 20th, where Rockwell will demonstrate how edge-based generative AI is reshaping the future of industrial operations.
