RGV calls Seedance 2.0, China’s video AI model, a killer in the film industry

In June 2025, when ByteDance released Seedance, it shocked the film industry around the world. Writers, directors, and studios are suddenly turning to tools that allow them to create high-quality, cinematic videos in seconds at minimal cost. Cut to 2026, ByteDance introduced Seedance 2.0, a more advanced and much more powerful AI model. result? Confusion, curiosity, and quite a bit of panic surrounding the existence of traditional filmmaking. Indian film director Ram Gopal Verma even called the film a “killer of the film industry”.

In other words, RGV is saying that AI is not coming to the film industry and all the jobs it offers, it is already here. Seedance 2.0, China’s video AI model, is so good that it’s already over in Bollywood and Hollywood.

In his post for X, RGV wrote a long note about how AI is shaking up the film industry, framing it as not just a technological change, but an existential threat to the way cinema has worked for decades.

“True democracy is about taking the tools out of the hands of the elite and putting them in the hands of the people. Seadance has brought just that to film,” he wrote on Wednesday.

In his note, RGV drew a comparison between the clips that Seedance 2.0 made for a few bucks and those made by blockbuster filmmakers like SS Rajamouli on huge budgets. He said falling costs mean the era of gatekeeping in the film industry is over.

“Seedance 2.0 just kicked down the gates and set it on fire. It takes descriptive prompts[from users]and creates cinematic, multi-shot, sound-designed, devastatingly impactful scenes that look like they cost billions and took months or even years to make,” he wrote. “All of a sudden, a creative guy in Gorakhpur or Coimbatore or Satara or wherever, doing a menial job to support his family who can’t even afford to come to Mumbai, can just write a scene and people like Seadance will create it for him. That’s true democracy in action.”

RGV thinks Seedance 2.0 is an exciting development, but also has questions about what it means for the film industry as a whole. He says AI tools are a potential threat to the collaborative ecosystem of filmmaking, actors, cinematographers, editors, production designers, VFX teams, musicians, lighting technicians and spotters, all of whom could be endangered if AI evolves to independently produce theatrical-quality feature films.

“No more star issues. No more producers panicking about budgets. No more ‘We’ll fix it in post.'” No more 300 people standing around waiting for a shot. Only one, he writes. “The dinosaurs had a 100-year reign. Now the asteroids have arrived.”

RGV has welcomed Seedance 2.0, but not everyone has welcomed it the same way. In fact, Hollywood is reacting violently and angrily to AI models. Major studios including The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, and Warner Bros. have reportedly sent legal notices to ByteDance, likely delaying SeaDance 2.0’s global rollout indefinitely. The AI ​​tool still has controlled access and was scheduled to be made publicly available on February 24th.

Clips created with Seedance 2.0 have gone viral in recent weeks, prompting the Motion Picture Association to send a cease-and-desist letter to Bytedance, allegedly branding the company’s AI tools a “systematic infringement machine.”

Hollywood studios also accused ByteDance of training models based on what it called a “pirate library” of copyrighted movies and characters. As a result, ByteDance has reportedly paused widespread releases in order to implement stricter content filters and legal safeguards.
