Reliance Industries plans to set up a 1 GW artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced on Friday, November 14. Reuters reported.
The move joins other major technology investments by global giants such as Google and Microsoft to strengthen India’s growing digital infrastructure.
Mr. Naidu did not disclose the amount of Reliance’s investment.
Companies around the world are investing heavily in building new infrastructure to meet the growing demand for AI services.
With nearly 1 billion internet users, India represents a significant growth market.
Early last month, Google pledged $15 billion over five years to set up an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, its largest investment ever in the country.
Microsoft and Amazon are also investing billions of dollars to expand their data center operations in India.
Naidu said Reliance’s planned data center will operate as a twin gigawatt-scale AI data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and “together they will form one of the strongest AI infrastructure networks in Asia.”
AI workloads require vast amounts of computing power, driving the need for dedicated data centers that link thousands of chips into high-performance clusters.
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group includes India’s leading telecom provider Jio, Reliance Retail Ltd, Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd and Jamnagar, India’s largest oil complex.
